Over the past couple of years I have noticed that my skin is getting more and more sensitive. Products I used to use freely are now causing irritation to my skin, flare ups, and well, just making me more and more uncomfortable. I was never really a researcher until I met my husband, who is the biggest researcher I know. It was about a year ago when I started learning about essential oils which started my long and exhausting research into non-toxic products and which ingredients I was supposed to be avoiding. Over time I’ve found some products that have had amazing results for me but also are free of the yucky toxins that I had been reacting to in the past. I wanted to share some of those products here with you in case you were also interested in making the switch to some more natural skincare products.
Keep in mind that I am a simple girl who is honestly super lazy when it comes to my skincare and getting ready routine. If it’s going to be too many steps or too hard to maintain, I WILL NOT KEEP UP WITH IT. So, with that in mind, know that this is extremely simple and easy to do. The homemade products are inexpensive and take very minimal time to create, and your skin is going to be so grateful you took the time to take care of it.

I will also be providing the Think Dirty ratings for each of the products I use to help you understand why I choose to use them and what I love about them. If you don’t already know about the Think Dirty app, it’s a super cool and easy to use resource that allows you to scan all of your household and skincare products to see how toxic/harmful the ingredients are. A rating of 0-3 is in the green zone and considered to be okay for use. A rating of 4-7 contains some harsh chemicals but might be okay when used in moderation. And a rating of 8 is super toxic and should probably be avoided if possible.
Since I have been trying to grow my hair out I have wanted to make sure that the products I have been using were both natural, but growth promoting. I start my morning with 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen powder either in my coffee (since its unflavored) or in my preworkout drink. Collagen is AMAZING for your hair, skin, and nails. It promotes both growth and health leaving your hair shiny and soft.

After my morning coffee, or workout, I’ll shower and use Honest Baby Shampoo & Conditioner on my hair. Both are rated 3 on the Think Dirty app. My favorite is the “Perfectly Gentle Sweet Orange and Vanilla” scent for both but I am thinking of trying the lavender scent next! You can find them at Target or on Amazon. I’ve even been able to find this brand at Costco before in a 2 pack which was super convenient! But I haven’t seen it there in a while.
To wash my body I like to use Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap – Baby Unscented, 32oz., rated 1 on the Think Dirty app. I buy it in a liquid and use a loofah to scrub my body but some people, like my husband, prefer to use bar soap. Again, we like to use the “baby unscented” one. I like this one because if I want to add essential oils to the liquid one I can do that and scent it myself.

After the shower, my hair usually gets towel dried and immediately up in a bun while I take care of my skin. First I will wash and exfoliate my face with some Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap – Baby Unscented, 32oz.. It’s nice and gentle on my skin but also rids my skin of dead skin and dirt. You can use any exfoliating brush, but here is a link to the silicone one I use from Amazon. Once I’ve washed my face, this is typically when I brush my teeth. I switched to a natural toothpaste a while back and I’ve never looked back! I like Hello Oral Care Activated Charcoal Fluoride Free Whitening Toothpaste, 4 Ounce – 2 Pack
, which is rated a 3 on the Think Dirty app. They have plenty of flavors and even some for kids! After that, I cleanse my face with some witch hazel. I use T.N. Dickinson witch hazel which is rated 0 on the Think Dirty app. I was able to find a 2 pack on Amazon. And finally for my face, I use a homemade face oil with Rosehip Oil as the base, and 20 drops of lavender, lemon, and frankincense essential oils, and 5-10 drops of tea tree for acne. Again, the only brands that I recommend for essential oils are: Young Living & Plant Therapy.
This face oil nourishes and balances my skin making it smooth and even all over. It’s taken away all the dry and blotchy patches and has helped a ton with my acne! Every once in a while I still have acne flare ups because of certain foods or stress but it’s really made me look and feel much more confident in my skin. Finally, I will moisturize my entire body with organic coconut oil.

Now that I have taken care of my face and body, I put on my Native Deodorant Lavender & Rose 2.65oz. I have tried sooooo many natural deodorants and didn’t have much luck. Most of them would cause me to break out, or didn’t last very long at all, which I mean come on, that’s pretty embarrassing. Native Deodorant has been the only one to last all day, keeping me fresh and smelling nice without giving me an ugly skin reaction. Most of the scents rank 1 on the Think Dirty app. My favorites have been “Lavender & Rose” and “Cotton & Lily” but I also liked the “Orange & Honeysuckle” which was nice because the smell compliments my shampoo and conditioner nicely. You can find these in Target stores or online via the Native Deodorant website!
Now that I have taken care of my skin, I’ve gotten dressed and ready for the day, I let my hair down, spray it with some homemade mermaid hair spray, which is made of 2-3oz of witch hazel and about 30 drops of Lavender, Cedarwood, and Rosemary essential oils. Most days I will let my hair air dry to prevent breakage.
And that’s it! That’s how I get ready for the day.
I don’t typically wear a lot of makeup and will only wear it on special occasions. If/when I have a makeup routine I can post that here for you in the future.
I have updated the amazon links to go directly to the products I use. This links will be affiliated with Amazon. No other links are affiliated. I will feel overjoyed to hear your stories about what sort of non-toxic products you’ve been using so please feel free to share with me at caylee@coffeetalk.online!
Much Love,
Caylee
